In a country composed of 17000 islands that showcases a pristine coastline spanning 81.000km, it is no suprise that surfing and grilling fish is a favorite past time of the people. Everything here is always shared with friends or family, as South East Asian culture is not as individualistic as ours in the west. Michael Bertagnolio is a Photographer based in Paris, France. The subway system in NYC is an awesome thing. Let’s start there. Even when you’ve just missed the G, or the E train isn’t running that weekend, it ain’t all that bad. After years of belly-aching I’m realizing this fact now, since moving to the SF area. I’ve got new issues with the BART here. Back to NY. For most people that ride the subway in NYC, there’s an urgency to get someplace. But once you swipe your card all …
I found myself in the United Arab Emirates in June of 2012 after my cousins and I planned a journey East to Indonesia to see our aunt. Rather than spending a few hours in an airport for a layover, we embraced the opportunity to spend a long weekend in the Middle East. The United Arab Emirates, is an existing contradiction. A conservative Muslim culture co-exists with the most unapologetic demonstration of consumerism, I’ve ever seen. It is a desert sprouting …
By focusing on bodegas in East Harlem I was able to show the unique demographics of the neighborhood. One of my findings was that each bodega would mirror the distinct personality of the owner, resulting in Latino and American influences that directly affect the style and placement of products in the store. I searched for things that are ordinarily overlooked, photographing them with the intent to bring focus to commonplace subjects that may give a sense of wonder to the viewers. …
Aurora is about the constant disruption of our imaginations and natural thought process caused by technology. It is also about the dichotomy of worlds we find ourselves in as young adults. In one of them we live as people who have succumbed to city life and the expected activities involved in order to survive and be successful. The other, residing deep within our imaginative mind, is a place where no compromises exist. We are free to not only be our best, but to be our most. It is an uncompromised state of existence; unyielding, powerful, and a place of beauty. An Aurora.
In April 2012 I went to Pyongyang for 3 days during Kim Il-Sung’s 100th birthday. One of the biggest misbeliefs about North Korea is that it’s really difficult to go there. Nothing about it is hard as long as you’re willing to pay. Aside from that the rest is all true. You are guided 100% of the time, and you can’t leave your hotel or go anywhere without a guide. Every minute of your stay is prescribed and it’s obligatory …
In September of 2012, I went on spiritual quest with my family to seek wisdom and escape from reality. During our escape portion, we went to the tourist destination of Varadero Beach. It’s mystifying beaches and crystal clear waters were something that are indescribable. Along with this beauty comes this strange culture that is something unlike the rest of Cuba. This is a place where old Cuba and the “modern” Cuba merge. It’s a vortex that is striving to become …
